St. Peter - Keeper of the Keys to Heaven
Simon was a fisherman when his friend Andrew came to him in the company of Jesus. Jesus captured Peter's faith by performing the miracle where he filled Peter's nets with so many fish the Peter fell at the feet of the Christ who said: "Fear not, for now you will be a fisher of men". Jesus gave him a new name" Peter, meaning the one made of stone. Peter knew him as "... the Messiah, the son of the living God. Christ told him that he was the rock on whom his church would be built. The son of God blessed him further with the power of the popes, saying ãI will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
"O God, who hast given unto Thy blessed Apostle Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and the power to bind and loose: grant that we may be delivered, through the help of this intercession, from the slavery of all our sins."
