ANIMAL SPIRIT - BUFFALO

The Buffalo is one of the most important and honored of all the four-leggeds on Turtle Island (the Americas). The Buffalo was at the center of the life of the Plains Indians, especially the Lakotah. The Lakotah lived by the Buffalo, and their Prophetess, White Buffalo Calf Woman, appeared only once in their history, and that was to give the sacred pipe, called Chunanpi, to the people. It was made from the windpipe of a buffalo, and it was given with the instructions that the people were to take it and use it to make their breath visible, as an offering to the spirit world, and as the means to sanctify their words. The Buffalo gave its meat and hides to the people, that they might live, but it's also tied up with their bond to the truth, that they might grow.
