Spirals abound in nature – from the shape of seashells to hurricanes to galaxies. In the Celtic culture they can be found on a myriad of artifacts and monuments, especially Dolmans and grave sites. While their exact meaning remains unknown they are believed to represent the travel from the inner life to the outer soul or higher spirit forms: the concept of growth, expansion, and the radiation of ethereal energy. If seen as spiraling inwards they could mean the journey from the outer materialistic world to the inner spiritual one. If seen as spiraling outwards it may mean the expansion of consciousness from the core outwards encompassing learning and experiences. Spirals, thus, represent both – creation and self-realization.
