TALISMAN AMULET - DIVINATION DISK OF PERGAMON

Divination (from the Latin divinaire - "to foresee or to be inspired by God") is an attempt to answer questions by way of a formal ritual. This amulet is a replica of a 12 cm diameter bronze disk found in Pergamon - an ancient Greek city in what is now Turkey. The original disc was discovered in 1899 and is now housed at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. It is convex on one side and flat on the other. Inscriptions on the convex side are arranged in 4 concentric circles, divided into 8 segments each. They are filled with magical characters, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Greek letters and the seven Greek vowels which are thought to represent the seven known planets of the time, whose harmony kept the Universe in existence. While the exact divination method used by the magicians of Pergamon is unknown it has been suggested that the disk may have been spun like a top or used as an instrument to enter a hypnotic trance in order to foresee answers.
