MYSTIC NILE - The Egyptian Collection - THE CARTOUCHE
The cartouche is an ancient Egyptian design that honors the name inscribed within it. It symbolizes the power that is in a name as well as the respect in which it is held. To surround a name with a line symbolizes the protective force that envelops it. The name symbolizes the person and the cartouche protects the name. Most Egyptian cartouches surround the names of Gods and those of Pharaohs, who were seen as the incarnation of the Sun God, Ra. To carry such a cartouche might be seen as a way of respecting the force of the Gods, the Earthly Powers, One's fellow humans, and oneself.
