The Turtle is one of the oldest symbols of the Earth. The turtle withdraws into its shell, and in this way it teaches us how to withdraw into ourselves, and to create our own protective spaces. The Turtle is a spirit messenger, always telling us to be grounded, to go slowly, to look to ourselves for safety, to do what we must, but not to get caught up in the flow of things that are outside our power to direct. Above all, the remember the Earth. Many traditions, including those of the native American Indians, the Hindus and the Buddhists believe that the Earth rests on the back of a huge turtle which makes its home in the cosmic waters. Native peoples of North American stall call their land Turtle Island, and honor it as the Earth itself.
