EIRE-The Celtic Collection - SAINT GEORGE
Saint George (circa 275/281 – 23 April 303 AD) was a soldier in the Roman army of Diocletian. Born of Greek Christian parents in the Roman province of Syria Palestinia (Palestine) he became an outstanding soldier in the Roman army like his father. On 24 February AD 303, Diocletian issued an edict that every Christian soldier in the army should be arrested and every other soldier should offer a sacrifice to the Roman gods. George declared his Christian faith and chose to be tortured and put to death rather than make sacrifices to the Roman gods and for this he later became venerated as a Christian martyr and as a saint of the Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox Churches. Images of St. George depict him as slaying a dragon, symbolic of the devil.
